about

This short instrumental is based around the oldest surviving complete musical composition, including musical notation, from anywhere in the world.
It was written about 2000 years ago in ancient Greek musical notation, and was discovered on the Seikilos epitaph (shown on the right).

This epitaph (the words are shown under LYRICS) was found engraved on a tombstone (a stele) from the Hellenistic town of Tralles near present-day Aydın, Turkey.

I wrote it as the opening tune for the musical "River" which was written in 2001.

In this track it is arranged for flute, harp, cello and bass.

lyrics

While you live, shine
have no grief at all
life exists only for a short while
and Time demands his due
